Dr. Qiyang Lu was born and raised in Huai’an, Jiangsu, China. He received his bachelor’s degree from Tsinghua University (2012) and his PhD degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT, 2018), both in Materials Science and Engineering. His PhD work was awarded best PhD thesis award from MIT. He did his postdoctoral study at Stanford University with a joint fellowship at Advanced Light Source, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He received several prestigious awards, including Graduate Student Gold Award from Materials Research Society and Ross Coffin Purdy award from American Ceramic Society.

Yunyun Zhu (朱云云)

Yunyun Zhu is from Nantong city of Jiangsu province. She obtained her bachelor degree of mechatronic engineering from Jiangsu University of Science and Technology in 2013. She has worked in manufacturing industries for more than seven years. In April 2021, she joined the Solid State Ionics Lab as an administrative assistant.

Dr. Ying Lu (陆颖)

Dr. Ying Lu was born and raised in Anhui, China. She received her bachelor and master degree from South China University of Technology, and her PhD degree from Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences on structural ceramics. After that She worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Shenzhen University on solid oxide cells. After working as a postdoctoral scholar in the SSI lab for two years, she is continuing her research on solid oxide cells and perovskite ceramics as a research scientist.

Dr. Rui Wang (王瑞)

Rui Wang received his B.S. in Powder Materials Science and Engineering (2015) and M.S. in Materials Science and Engineering (2018) from Central South University. There he learned about CALPHAD and the idea of ICME as well as MGI. He earned his Ph. D. in the Materials Science and Engineering program in the Mechanical and Materials Engineering Department, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, in 2023. His research covers both alloys as well as ceramics, e.g. Al alloys, high-entropy alloys, steels, solid oxide cells, and molten salts. While his specialties include thermodynamic predictions as well as high-throughput CALPHAD simulations. He just joined Solid State Ionic Lab in April 2024, where he planned to continue his research on the application of thermodynamics in solid oxide cells.

Yang Hu (胡杨)

Yang Hu was born and raised in Yichang, Hubei, China. He received his bachelor’s degree from Chengdu University of Technology (2017) and his master degree from University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (2020), both in Materials Science and Engineering. From July 2020, he joined the Solid State Ionics Lab as a research associate. He will officially join Westlake as a PhD student in Fall 2021.

Kaichuang Yang (杨开创)

Kaichuang Yang was born and raised in Lianyungang, Jiangsu, China. He received his BS and MS from China University of Mining and Technology-Beijing. Since 2021, he has joined Solid State Ionic Lab as a PhD student. His current research focuses on the phase transitions of oxide at high temperature and the applications in solid oxide cells, electrocatalysis, and energy storage materials.

Luhan Wei (魏路焓)

Luhan Wei was born and raised in Zhang’zhou, Fujian, China. He received his Bachelor degree from Northeastern University in Functional Materials (expected in July 2021). His previous research focused on first-principle study and performance modulation of transition metal/Graphene composite electrocatalysts. From July 2021, he will join the Solid State Ionics Lab as a PhD student, his future research will focus on the mechanistic understanding of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) by using various in situ/operando characterization tools.

Jieping Zheng (郑杰平)

Jieping Zheng was born and raised in Quzhou, Zhejiang, China. He is expected to receive his bachelor’s degree from Zhejiang University in Material Science and Engineering. He is interested in solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs) and mechanical problems in solid oxide cells.

Song Mao (毛松)

PhD Student (co-advised with Prof. Xiao Yang)

BS & MS Central South University (2019, 2022)

Song Mao was born and raised in Suzhou, Anhui Province. He received his bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from Central South University in 2019 and 2022, respectively, both in Metallurgical Engineering. He joined Solid State Ionic Lab in August 2022. As a PhD student, now he focuses on molten oxide electrolysis (MOE) and related oxygen evolution reaction (OER) on an inert anode. In the future, he wishes to reduce metal oxides with electrons, rather than with carbon or coke.

Zihan Xu (徐子涵)

Zihan Xu was born and raised in Wenzhou, Zhejiang, China. She is expected to receive her bachelor’s degree from North China Electric Power University in New Energy Materials and Devices. She worked as a visiting student in the SSI lab until Summer 2022. She started her PhD study in Fall 2023.

Bin Zhao (赵斌)

Bin Zhao was born and raised in Puyang City, Henan Province, China. He is expected to obtain a bachelor’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering from Zhengzhou University in June 2024. Before enrollment, his major was metal materials and forming processing. In the future, his research will focus on the development of electrochemical ion synaptic (EIS) using room temperature electrochemical methods and attempt to solve the underlying scientific problems.

Lingzhi Huang (黄灵芝)

Lingzhi Huang was born and raised in Fengcheng, Jiangxi Province. She received her bachelor’s degree from Jilin University in 2022 and her master’s degree from Beihang University in 2025, respectively. She worked as a visiting student in the Solid State Ionics Lab in January 2025 and will start her PhD in the fall of 2025. As a PhD student, she now focuses on the research of the OER reaction mechanism in perovskite oxide films.

Xi Wang (王曦)

Xi Wang was born and raised in Deyang, Sichuan, China. He respectively obtained his bachelor and master’s degrees from Northeastern University (Shenyang) in 2021 and 2024, both majoring in metallurgical engineering. From November 2024, he joined the Solid State Ionics Lab as a research assistant. His research focuses on perovskite-type proton conductor materials and solid oxide fuel cells based on them.
